Adventures of Hamster Ownership
Hello and welcome to this week’s post! I recently purchased a few different sizes of popsicle sticks from my local dollar store, and I was very eager to create something with them.
After some thought I designed this house, with a second story and a removable lid for easier cleaning. The stilts are for submerging in substrate to prevent the house from moving or crushing a burrowing hamster.
‘For Dwarf Hamsters,’ is not a suggestion; this DIY is not a suitable size for Syrian/Chinese hamsters.
When looking to adopt a hamster most people automatically go to a pet store, but are there better options? What makes those options better? How do you know if an option is “good?” Today we’ll be talking about why supporting pet stores isn’t the best choice and offering ideas for places to find a hamster to adopt.
Greetings! This week I will be demonstrating how I created this really neat popsicle stick bridge for Beanie, my Syrian hamster.
This toy is inspired by those rainbow-bridge toys, which I’ve tried making before. However, I find it is very difficult to get the rails right when I try with cardboard, so I wanted to try it with popsicle sticks. Personally, I’m quite pleased with the results!
I’ll be showing you how to make a simple (and adorable!) small pet house from a cardboard Dollarama suitcase.
In January I posted about the worst things I’d bought and/or used with Beanie, but this week I wanted to specifically talk about the mistakes I made. Despite how much research I did before getting Beanie, I made a ton of mistakes with her. It has a little fenced-in upper platform with a ramp leading to and from it. Below is a larger platform perfect for a food dish to rest.

You may have seen wooden versions of this hut before, but today I’m going to be showing you how to make it out of cardboard and popsicle sticks. his type of hut is really fun because you can make them in so many different silhouettes depending on what shape you make the cardboard walls! I did change the design slightly from the original toy I saw, adding a shelf inside leading to an upper door. I’m including the measurements to make this toy for all hamster species, gerbils, and mice.
